According to a new study, mid-sized businesses are 490% more likely to experience a breach in 2021 than they were in 2019.
The study, conducted by Coro, also found that, between 2020 and 2021, the number of attacks on mid-size businesses, regardless of sector, rose by 50%. For some industries, like health care and transportation, that number hit 125%.
Beyond that, some troubling stats emerge, according to the study. Malware delivered via email has increased by 154% over the last year; insider threats has increased by 132%. This is compounded by the fact that 70% of deployments for mid-sized businesses are misconfigured.
The rising number of attacks has grave consequences. According to one estimate, the average cost of an attack is $200,000. For many small and medium-sized businesses, that could be too much to rebound from—and according to one survey, 60% of SMBs that are hacked go out of business within six months.
